[NI1285] Well --- wish I could give you MORE about Deborah's in-laws but my source is only a Bible record and notes by a Bosworth Moss Todd. In the '70's Carl and I drove to KY and TN to find any remnants of my father's families. In Shelby Co. KY a distant cousin showed me the notes (Bible was elsewhere) which I copied. No copy machines had been invented yet. To begin with, Henry's birth date does not fit the census decade schedules before 1850. I have 1773-1834 and the death is OK because I have an inventory list of his possessions. The birth could be around 1768 if we go by the estimate of his age which Henry gave when helping a friend qualify for the Am Rev pension.
He was b in Cabarrus Co. NC but who his parents were is a big question mark. There were several William's who had Henry son's but the DAR applications for these William's do not include ALL the siblings. I do know that after Henry and Deborah were married, around 1795, they migrated with other Baptists from the Cold Water Church into Mercer Co. KY. I have several record summaries of land transactions there from about 1804 to around 1818 when the group apparently moved west to Shelby Co. KY. But only Henry and Deborah stayed in the area (one census shows them in Oldham Co. which adjoins Shelby and Jefferson) -- the rest moving up into Indiana. Here's where I CANNOT separate the Townsends and find Henry's parents
Marriages in Shelby Co. give my Esther b 18 Dec 1792 marrying James Moss Dec 1814. She died 18 Feb 1871, but death records in KY are not available for that period. For sure I know of only one other child of Henry's --- Susan Townsend m Lemuel Denson 1821 in KY. James should have been in the War of 1812 but I'''ve never looked to see --- There is a book of KY Marriages which gives more Townsend marriages in KY, but which ones belong to Henry and Deborah?
This is where I "lose" the Townsends. Hope someone will eventually identify Henry's parents. Better be soon as I'm 86!! Sincerely, Molly in California

I am looking for the family of Peter Townsend, born 1798 NC and moved to Morgan Co., Indiana @ 1830s. Could he be related to your Townsends in Morgan Co.? I would be interested in learning more about your family.

I am familiar with your line. They were close to the Loftons and Voyles in both NC and IN. Have you ever come across a Henry & Deborah Townsend? They were mentioned on KY land records with my Loftons and felt there might be a family relationship. The land record was in Mercer Co., KY about 1810 on Wilson's Creek and mentions an Archibald Bilbo.

Followups:

RE: Garnett Townsend m. Elizabeth Hall at Boonesborough, KY.
William, Edward, and Thomas Hall came to Boonesborough in the last of March or first part of April 1779. The family had another brother, Micajah Hall and a sister, their sister married Garnett Townsend. The information that you posted seems to fit that the Hall sister's name was Elizabeth. Edward Hall was b. Dec. 25, 1757 and d. July 13,1838; the Hall sister could have been born in the time period of 1772 - 1775. My reference on the Hall sister marrying Garnett Townsend is Revolutionary War pension statement of Edward Hall: "Edward Hall's brother William Hall died in the services at Boonesborough [killed by Indians] and Garnett Hall who married his sister ..."

Micajah Hall m. Milly Powell on Aug. 4, 1806, Bondsman was James Powell. I had been given a reference to legal troubles between Michajah Hall and Garnett Townsend over a child.

I have fairly complete information on my ggg grandfather Edward Hall. My interest is finding out more about his brothers and sister. I can not confirm that the sister's name was Elizabeth, but revolutionary pension records confirm that she married Garnett Townsend.

[NI2632] Notes from David Land ; Forest Young was my great uncle. He had served active duty in the Navy during WWII. He was a disabled veteran due to a herat attack and for all the years I knew him, he did not work.We loved going to their house when we were kids. They alaways made us feel like we were princes and princesses. Uncle Forest was very warm -hearted and had a great sense of humor. They lived on main street through town, Washington Street, which was originally residential but began developing as a business sector, in Kaufman.
A Piggly Wiggley Store went in next door to them in the mid 1960's. I recall him making comments and laughing about the particulary large women who shopped at the store. Also he always gave my mother a hard time for speeding down Washington St. on her way to work. I think he referred to her as the blue streak, for her blue 53 Chevy.

[NI7384] Nannie Montgomery had a black baby by Oscar Cunningham. She had the baby on Big South Fork in a hay field,it is
said that she killed the baby when it was born....Another story is that the boy's mother burnt it to death in a oven of a stove.... After this she ran away to Louisville Ky with Frank Sears...After his wife had died Alice Wiser.
He was suppost to have lived with her there for about a year or sp..From there she left with a man named Wallace,(Don't know if this is a first or last name)This story told to me by Burl Reeves amd my mother Nellie Lee Turpin October 1978. The story would have happened before 1911.Nannie was never seen by her family again.
My grandmother Bessie Montgomery Turpin told a story that Nannie and Her mother Lucinda Helen Wiser Montgomery had gotten into a fight and Helen cut Nannie with a butcher knife that is when nannie ran away...
These are family story and how much is truth we will never know.......

[NI8067] Joseph Nivens is listed in the 1820 Warren County, TN Census as having 1
male (0-10 yr.), 2 female (0-10 yr.), 2 daughters (10-16 yr.), and a wife
(26-46 yr.). His age is listed as 26-46 years..

In 1826 Joseph purchased from Ben Hughes a one hundred acre tract of land
for the price of five hundred dollars. This land was located on Noah's Fork
of the Duck River in the County of Bedford. This part of Bedford County
became a part of Coffee County in 1837 when Coffee County was formed. It is
believed that this is part of the land that his son, William Nivens 1809 TN,
sold when he moved to Missouri in 1853.

In the 1830 Bedford County, TN Census, Joseph, is listed as having 1
daughter (5-10 yr.), 1 son (20-30 yr.) and a wife (40-50 yr.). His age is
listed as 50-60 years. Four slaves were listed.

Joseph Nivens registered a deed for 100 acres purchased from Baxter B.
Dickens on April 6, 1836 for the sum of $400.00. Baxter B. Dickens, had
previously purchased the land from William Potterfield. William Potterfield
and William Nivens signed as witnesses. Properties adjacent to the land
belonged to Benjamin Webber, David Patton and Hickum (bought from Thomas A.
Patton). The land lying in Cannon, TN was originally a part of Rutherford
County, TN.

listed as 40-50 years. Four slaves were listed.

Joseph Nivens and Baxter B. Dickens witnessed the recording of a deed for 70
acres sold by William and Franky Howard to Aaron Byford on June 29, 1840.

Isaac W. Elege and wife Nancy (Nivens), Daniel Wiser and wife Cinthia
(Nivens), Asa Lemons and wife Elizabeth (Nivens), and Needham Jernigan and
wife Sarah (Nivens), heirs at law of Joseph Nivens appeared in the Cannon
County, TN court, March 6, 1844, to sell to William Nivens (son of Joseph
Nivens) their interest in the estate of Joseph Nivens for a sum of $100.00
paid to each. William Nivens agreed to pay all debts owed by the estate.

Rachel Nivens (wife of Joseph Nivens) was given as widows dower to have and
enjoy during her natural life one third of the land to include the dwelling
house, out houses and other buildings. She was also given one horse, two
cows, nine head of sheep, one sow, eight goats, four of the largest killing
hogs, all the household furniture and the kitchen furniture. Two thirds of
the property was to go to William Nivens on that date and the balance at
Rachel's death. Dated April 25, 1844. The agreement was signed by I.W.
Elege, Nancy Elege (mark), Daniel Wiser, Cinthia Wiser, Needham Jernigan
(mark), Sarah Jernigan (mark), Rachel Nivens (mark) and William Nivins.

I am still working to get all the information I have in my computer.

While working in Massachusetts I made several trips to Coffee County,
searching for information on Joseph Nivens. We moved to Lebanon, TN two
years ago, since then I have been searching for information in all the
counties where he lived. Joseph and his brothers moved to Davidson County
in the late 1700's. I have found several records of them in Davidson,
Rutherford, Williamson, Bedford, Coffee and Cannon Counties. They were
signers of the petition to form Rutherford County in 1804.
