For Immediate Release:

Trombones at Tech, the TTU Trombone Choir, along with the Bryan Symphony Orchestra, TTU’s Center Stage Guest Artist Series, and the Office of Student Activities are proud to present a week of trombone related activities.

Events begin on Tuesday morning, November 13th at 11:05 AM with a radio broadcast by The Slide Company, a jazz trombone group featuring TTU Associate Professor of Trombone, Dr. Joshua Hauser, along with Nashville mainstays Roy Agee, Barry Green and Bill Huber, trombones, Bruce Dudley, piano, Tony Nagy, bass, and Bob Mater, drums.  Joining the group will be special guest artist Joseph Alessi of the New York Philharmonic.  This will be broadcast live on WPLN radio’s Live in Studio C at 11:06 AM with a rebroadcast at 8:06 PM.

Following that, Alessi will be holding a masterclass on Thursday morning, November 15th at 11 AM in the Bryan Fine Arts Building on the TTU campus.  On Friday, November 16th, he will be performing the great Trombone Soloist Arthur Pryor’s Air Varie for trombone and band with the TTU Symphony Band under the direction of Joseph Hermann at 7:30 PM in the newly relit Wattenbarger Auditorium.

After the concert, The Slide Company will present a live show at The Library, located on Jefferson Avenue, behind Wooly Bully’s.   There will be a nominal cover charge for this event.

On Saturday, November 17th, TTU will be hosting an all day Trombone Extravaganza. Alessi will hold another masterclass from 10-12, followed by lunch, a large trombone ensemble reading session and a series of mini-concerts by visiting trombone ensembles.  At 7:30 PM, Alessi will perform a solo recital accompanied by Paul Thurmond on Piano.  The 2nd half of the concert will feature the TTU Trombone Choir, directed by Joshua Hauser and Joseph Alessi performing works by Brahms, John Stevens, Glenn Martin, and TTU Professor of Composition, Greg Danner.

“We are delighted to be hosting this event and are over the moon that we were able to bring down Joe Alessi,” says Hauser.  “I have had the opportunity to work with him a couple of times over the years and he is truly one of the finest musicians on the planet.  These concerts and masterclasses should be of interest to any music fan, not just trombone enthusiasts.  We are very fortunate to have Center Stage, Student Activities and the BSO working together to help us sponsor Alessi’s residency.”

“We are also using this weekend to launch our new Trombone Choir CD, recorded last spring and only just released.  The recording includes new works by myself, Greg Danner, TTU Alumnus Glenn Martin, and a work from 1980 written for the ensemble by TTU Alum Aldo Forte. This project was done entirely by the students and is a testament to all of their hard work last year.  We took on some very difficult literature and the put together a great product.  I am really proud of them all.”

The weekend finishes with a performance of the Stephen Gryc Passaggi for trombone and orchestra, performed by Alessi with the Bryan Symphony Orchestra, Dan Allcott, Conductor.

“We encourage you to join us for any or all of this outstanding weekend of brass playing,” says Hauser.
